Frequently asked questions
Before you breathe
Everything people ask us, answered properly. If yours isn’t here, email hello@breathation.com. We answer every one, and the good questions end up on this page.
01
New to breathwork
What it is, what it does, and whether it’s for you.
What is breathwork?
Breathwork is the deliberate use of your breath to change what’s happening in your body and mind. You breathe in a particular pattern, for a particular length of time, guided by someone who’s watching over you, and your physiology shifts in response.
What people usually notice is a kind of quieting, or a release of something they’d been holding without realising. You don’t need to understand any of it for it to work. You just breathe.
What actually happens to my body?
When you breathe faster and deeper than usual for a sustained period, you shift the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in your blood. That changes your blood’s pH, which changes how your blood vessels behave and how your nerves fire.
Practically, that’s why people feel tingling in their hands and lips, why their muscles sometimes tense or cramp, why they feel hot or cold, and why emotion often arrives without warning. None of it is mystical. It’s chemistry, and it’s why the practice is powerful and why it isn’t right for everybody.
Do I need any experience?
None. First Breath is built for people who have never done this before. It’s short, gentle, and the whole point is to give you a taste without asking anything of you.
Most people arrive having never done breathwork. You won’t be the only one.
Do I need to be fit or flexible?
No. You lie down. That’s the position.
If lying flat for a long stretch is uncomfortable for you, tell us. We’ll set you up with bolsters and props so you’re properly supported.
I’m sceptical. Is that a problem?
Not remotely. Scepticism isn’t an obstacle to breathwork the way it might be to something belief-based. You’re doing a physical practice, and your body responds regardless of what your mind makes of it.
Plenty of people arrive here dubious. You don’t have to believe anything, adopt anything, or say anything.
Is this religious or spiritual?
Breathwork has roots in a lot of traditions, and different studios lean different ways. We keep it grounded. No dogma, nothing you have to believe, nothing you’re asked to sign up to.
Some people have experiences they’d describe as spiritual. Others have an experience they’d describe as a very good nap. Both are fine, and neither is the goal.
What are felt-sense markers?
Felt-sense markers are your body’s own signals during breathwork: tingling, warmth, softening, emotional waves, or a sense of inner spaciousness.
They aren’t goals to chase. They’re invitations to notice what’s moving through you. Each class level lists the markers most commonly reported at that stage, so you know roughly what territory you’re in, not so you can grade yourself on whether you got there.
How do I listen to my body?
Start with curiosity rather than interpretation.
When a sensation appears, name it gently: “heat in the chest,” “trembling in the hands,” “a wave of sadness.” Stay with it without trying to fix it or go deeper. Your breath is the guide; the body is the map.
If you can feel it, you’re already doing it right.
Will this fix my anxiety, my trauma, my insomnia?
We can’t promise you that, and we won’t.
Breathwork isn’t therapy and it isn’t medical treatment. What we can say is that many people find it helps them feel more settled, sleep better, and meet difficult feelings with more space around them. What it does for you is something only you’ll find out.
If you’re working with a therapist or a doctor, keep working with them. Breathwork sits alongside that, not instead of it.
02
Choosing a session
Five sessions. Phases, not levels.
Which one should I start with?
First Breath. It’s 45 minutes, it’s designed for people who’ve never done this, and it lets you find out how your body responds before you commit to two or three hours. Even experienced breathers who are new to how we work often start here.
What are the five sessions?
| Session | Length | Phase | What it’s for |
|---|---|---|---|
| First Breath | 45 min | Foundation | A gentle introduction. Feel the breath, build trust, prepare for deeper work. You may feel: gentle stillness. |
| Stillness & Source | 90 min | Origin | Grounding, inner silence, connecting to the source within. Gentle breath awareness, body scans, extended pauses. You may feel: deep inner silence. |
| Spiral of Expansion | 120 min | Inhale | Deep sustained inhales, conscious retention, expansive visualisation. Accessing deeper memory layers. You may feel: breath as movement. |
| Release & Return | 150 min | Exhale | Letting go, emotional clearing, returning to coherence. Long controlled exhales, vocal toning, rhythmic release of tension. You may feel: symbolic collapse. |
| Full Breath Journey | 180 min | Complete Spiral | The full journey through every phase: origin, expansion, release, return. You may feel: timelessness. |
Can I jump straight into a longer session?
If you’ve done breathwork before and know how you respond, yes. If you haven’t, please start with First Breath. The longer sessions assume a familiarity with your own responses that only comes from having done it.
Do I have to work through them in order?
No. They’re phases, not levels, and there’s no ladder to climb. Once you’ve got a feel for the practice, come to whichever one matches what you need that week.
Some people only ever do Release & Return. Some come back to First Breath for years. Neither is doing it wrong.
Do you offer private one-to-one sessions?
Yes. They’re 90 minutes and $199, and you book them through our booking system.
Do you run workshops, retreats or courses?
Yes, Trav will be running workshops, retreats and courses. You’ll hear about them on our socials, and you can book them through our booking system here on our website.

Is it safe for me?
Honest answers about health, pregnancy, medication and trauma.
Not sure? Ask before you book.
Email hello@breathation.com. We’d much rather have the conversation than have you guess.
Who shouldn’t do breathwork?
Breathwork is generally safe for healthy adults, but it isn’t suitable for everyone. Please check with your health professional before attending, and tell us at booking, if you have or have had:
- heart or circulation conditions: heart disease, high or low blood pressure, arrhythmia, aneurysm, stroke, blood clots
- epilepsy or any seizure history
- severe asthma or other significant respiratory conditions
- glaucoma, retinal detachment or recent eye surgery
- certain psychiatric conditions: psychosis, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder
- osteoporosis, or recent surgery or a significant injury
- pregnancy: our standard sessions are not suitable during pregnancy
This list isn’t exhaustive. If you’re unsure about anything, email us before you book.
Is breathwork safe?
Breathwork is generally safe for healthy adults, but it isn’t suitable for everyone.
The practice produces genuine physiological changes (in your blood chemistry, heart rate and blood pressure), and for some people those changes carry real risk. That’s why we ask everyone to complete a health declaration before their first session, and why we take it seriously.
Can I do breathwork while pregnant?
Our standard sessions are not suitable during pregnancy. The strong, sustained breathing patterns change blood chemistry and blood flow in ways that aren’t appropriate in pregnancy.
Gentle, pregnancy-specific breathwork does exist, with a differently trained facilitator. Get in touch about a private one-to-one session.
I have asthma. Can I come?
Usually yes, if it’s well controlled, but tell us at booking so we know.
Bring your reliever and keep it beside your futon. Some people find the sustained breathing patterns fine; others find they need to ease off. Your facilitator will keep an eye on you, and you’re free to drop back to normal breathing whenever you want.
If your asthma is severe or poorly controlled, please talk to your doctor first.
I take medication. Does that matter?
It might, so please tell us, particularly anything affecting your heart rate, blood pressure, seizures, breathing or mood.
We’re not assessing your medication and we won’t ask you to change it. We just want to know what’s in play so your facilitator can look after you.
I’ve experienced trauma. Is this safe for me?
This deserves an honest answer rather than a reassuring one.
Breathwork can bring difficult material to the surface, sometimes suddenly and sometimes without an obvious trigger. For some people that’s exactly the release they’ve been unable to reach any other way. For others, it can be overwhelming.
What we’d say:
- Start with First Breath. Short, gentle, and you can find out how you respond without being three hours in.
- Tell us beforehand. It’s on the health declaration, and it stays confidential. Knowing changes how your facilitator holds the room for you.
- If you’re working with a therapist, talk to them first. They know your history and we don’t.
- You can stop at any moment. You never have to keep going, and you never have to explain.
Breathwork is not trauma therapy and we don’t present it as such.
I’m on antidepressants or seeing a psychologist. Can I come?
Usually yes. Please tick it on the health declaration so we know.
Keep taking your medication and keep seeing your practitioner. Nothing that happens here should change either of those, and nobody at Breathation is qualified to advise you on them.
What if I feel panicked or overwhelmed during a session?
Stop. Come back to your natural breath. Open your eyes. Sit up if you want to.
A facilitator is present the whole time to support you, but your own consent is the rule. You can stop, rest, or signal for help at any moment, for any reason, and you never need to justify it.
Pause if you feel sharp pain, dizziness that doesn’t settle, or a rising sense of panic you can’t ground. Stopping isn’t failing. It’s the practice working: you listened to your body.
What if I cry, shake or laugh?
Completely normal, and more common than you’d think.
Tears, laughter, trembling, or old memories surfacing are all signs that the body is processing. You don’t need to perform them and you don’t need to explain them. The room is held so that whatever arises can move through and resolve.
Nobody will look at you. Everyone else has their eyes closed.
Will anyone touch me?
No. Our facilitators guide with voice and presence only. There’s no hands-on adjustment or physical contact at any point.
Do I have to talk or share?
No. There’s no circle, no going around the room, no telling anyone anything.
You arrive, you lie down, you breathe, you rest, you leave. If you want to talk to your facilitator afterwards you’re very welcome to. If you’d rather not say a word to anyone, that’s completely normal here.
Is there an age limit?
You need to be 18 or over, or have a parent or guardian’s written consent. Children and babies are not permitted in our studio sessions, as they are not covered under our insurance policy.
Can I come if I’m unwell?
Please don’t. If you have a cold, flu, COVID-19, gastro or anything contagious, stay home.
You won’t be penalised for cancelling on health grounds, at any notice. In a small room where twelve people are breathing deeply for two hours, this genuinely matters.
Can I come if I’ve been drinking or using drugs?
No. Please don’t attend under the influence of alcohol or any recreational substance. It isn’t safe with these breathing patterns, and we’ll have to ask you to leave.
04
What actually happens
From the moment you arrive to the moment you leave.
Talk me through a session.
Arrive. Choose your futon, pillow, bolster, blanket and eye pillow. Nothing to prepare. Everything to receive. Settle into stillness.
Breathe. A guide leads each inhale and exhale. You simply follow, and let the breath move you.
Integrate. After breathing, lie still and let your body settle. No need to speak. No need to understand. Leave lighter than you came.
How long is the actual breathing part?
It varies by session. In a 45-minute First Breath you might breathe actively for 20 minutes; in a 3-hour Full Breath Journey, considerably longer, in phases with rest between them.
A significant part of every session is lying still afterwards. The integration isn’t padding. It’s where a lot of the work lands.
Will there be music?
Yes. Music is part of how the sessions are shaped. It carries the arc of the practice and gives your nervous system something to move with.
Is it dark?
The lighting is low and ambient, and there’s an eye pillow on every futon if you’d like one. Most people use them.
How many people will be there?
A maximum of 12. We cap it there deliberately. The room comfortably holds more, but twelve is the number at which a facilitator can actually see everyone.
What if I fall asleep?
Then you needed sleep. It happens, particularly in the integration phase, and nobody minds.
What if I don’t feel anything?
Also completely normal, especially the first time.
Some people have a dramatic first session. Others notice almost nothing until they’re driving home, or until the next morning, or until the third session. Not feeling much doesn’t mean it isn’t working, and chasing a sensation is usually what stops it arriving.
Can I leave partway through?
Yes, at any time, for any reason. Tell the facilitator or leave quietly, whichever you can manage. You don’t owe anyone an explanation.
05
Practicalities
What to bring, wear, eat, and when to arrive.
What if I’m running late?
Doors close at the scheduled start time and we can’t let latecomers in. We know that’s firm. Sessions build through a settling phase into deep, sustained states, and someone arriving ten minutes in pulls twelve people out of it. There’s no safe way to join partway through.
Please give yourself more time than you think you need. Parking at Cotton Tree can be slow in summer.
What should I bring?
Just yourself. Futons, blankets, cushions and eye pillows are all provided.
If you’d like your own blanket or eye pillow because it’s more comfortable, bring it. Bring a water bottle too.
What should I wear?
Something comfortable you can breathe in and lie down in. Layers are a good idea. Bodies often get cold during the integration phase even when the room is warm.
Avoid tight waistbands. They matter more than you’d expect when you’re breathing deeply for an hour.
Should I eat beforehand?
Avoid a heavy meal right before class. Something light an hour or two before is ideal, but arriving hungry isn’t great either.
What time should I arrive?
10 minutes early. That gives you time to settle, choose your spot, arrange your props, and let your nervous system catch up with the fact you’ve arrived.
Should I bring a friend?
Absolutely. A lot of people find their first session much easier with someone they know in the room. Just book separately so you each complete your own health declaration.
Is there somewhere to change?
Yes. There are toilet and change facilities inside the studio.
Can I use my phone?
Please switch it off: not to silent, off. A vibration in a bag during the integration phase is enough to pull the whole room back.
Is there parking?
Ample street parking is available. It’s free in the surrounding streets for up to 2 hours, with more parking opposite at the Cotton Tree Aquatic Centre and Cotton Tree Park, and some parks at the rear after business hours.
Is the studio accessible?
Step-free entry is at the rear; otherwise, please use the front entrance. Doorways are 820 mm wide, and the bathroom is inside the studio. [HEARING LOOP — CONFIRM]
If you have any other access needs (mobility, hearing, vision, neurodivergence), there’s a box on the health declaration, or just email us. We’d much rather know beforehand than improvise on the day.
Can I bring my baby or my kids?
No, children and babies are not permitted in our studio sessions, as they are not covered under our insurance policy. We appreciate your understanding in helping us maintain a safe environment for everyone.

Afterwards
How you might feel, and how to look after yourself.
What if something difficult is still with me the next day?
Email us at hello@breathation.com. We read every one, and we’d rather hear from you.

How will I feel?
It varies enormously. Common: tired, calm, spacious, unusually clear. Also common: emotional, tender, or wide awake and buzzing.
All of it is normal. The main thing is not to expect a particular outcome and then judge yourself for not having it.
Should I do anything afterwards?
Drink water. Eat something. Be gentle with yourself for the rest of the day.
Try not to make big decisions or have big conversations straight afterwards. Give it a night.
Can I drive home?
Give yourself [10–15] minutes of sitting quietly before you get in the car, and check in with yourself honestly. If you feel light-headed or spacey, wait longer. There’s no rush and nobody will hurry you out.
How often should I come?
There’s no right answer. Some people come weekly, some monthly, some when something’s stuck.
Start with one and see how your body responds before you commit to a rhythm.
07
Bookings & payment
Prices, cancellations and credits.
What’s your cancellation policy?
24 hours’ notice for a scheduled class, and you get a full credit or a free reschedule. Inside 24 hours, the class is forfeited.
Everyone gets one late cancellation every 6 months, no questions asked. Life happens, and we’d rather you told us. Private sessions need 48 hours; workshops and special events need 7 days.
How do I book?
Online through our booking platform. Pick a session, complete the health declaration if it’s your first time, pay, and you’re confirmed.
Can I just turn up?
Please don’t. With only twelve places we’re often full, and we need your health declaration before you’re in the room.
How much does it cost?
All pricing lives inside our booking system and is available to you when you select the class.
Do you have an intro offer for first-timers?
Yes. Your first session, of any length, is $22, with the First Session pass in the booking app. It’s valid for 30 days from purchase, for first-time customers only, and doesn’t cover one-to-ones.
What if I’m sick?
Cancel and tell us, at any notice, and you’ll get a credit. You will never be penalised for staying home sick.
What if you cancel?
You choose: a full credit, a transfer to another session, or a full refund to your card.
Can I get a refund?
Credits are our default rather than refunds, but refunds apply where we’ve cancelled, where we’ve declined your booking on safety grounds, and in the circumstances set out in the Booking & Cancellation Policy.
Your rights under Australian Consumer Law aren’t affected by any of this. If something’s gone genuinely wrong, tell us and we’ll sort it out.
Do you do gift vouchers?
We currently do not offer gift vouchers.
Is there a waitlist?
Yes. If a class is full you can join it. When you join, you agree that if a place opens up we’ll book you in automatically and charge your payment method. If you then can’t come, our normal cancellation policy applies.
Can I transfer my booking to someone else?
Yes, with at least 4 hours’ notice, as long as they complete their own health declaration before attending.
Can I book for someone else as a surprise?
You can, but they’ll need to complete their own health declaration in their own name before they attend, so it can’t be a complete surprise on the day.
