How a session goes

Every session follows the same four parts, so you always know what’s coming and can leave the outside world behind.

01

Arrive

Choose a futon, lay down, settle in and get ready to be guided.

02

Settle

A short walk through of how you’ll be guided, and a quiet check-in on how you’re feeling.

03

Breathe

Lying down, guided the whole way, with a soundscape mindfully chosen to support each stage of the journey. You set your own rhythm.

04

Return

Slow rest, hydrate, and time to notice how you feel before you head back into the world.

Kind words

“Thank you so much for an incredible experience. In such a short window of time I felt the tension leave my jaw, shoulders and back. The breathing technique really allowed me to drop into my body and feel grounded, allowing me to complete full breath cycles as opposed to my default, which is shallow chest breathing. The session left me feeling zen and centred. I can see how much of a profound impact consistent practice will have. Thank you so much, Trav!”

Aleesha

“After the session, I stood up and realized I was pain-free in my lower limbs, something I hadn’t experienced in a long time… What little pain remained was at a one or two out of ten… Even after driving 24 hours and covering the whole trip back, I got out of the car walking normally, pain-free.”

Ian, retreat participant

“Before the breathwork session, I felt a mix of nervousness, excitement, and a bit of anxiety… The breathwork was the best thing possible to get your head, heart and soul at the right level to receive. It transformed my initial nervous and excited state into one of calm, confidence, and openness.”

Ready when you are

Choose a time that suits you. If it’s your first time, First Breath is the place to begin. You already have everything you need.

Before you breathe

The things people ask most often, answered simply and honestly.

Is breathwork safe?

Breathwork is generally safe for healthy adults, but it isn’t suitable for everyone.

The practice produces genuine physiological changes (in your blood chemistry, heart rate and blood pressure), and for some people those changes carry real risk. That’s why we ask everyone to complete a health declaration before their first session, and why we take it seriously.

What if I’ve never done it before?

First Breath is built for people who have never done this before. It’s short, gentle, and the whole point is to give you a taste without asking anything of you.

Most people arrive having never done breathwork. You won’t be the only one.

What should I wear?

Something comfortable you can breathe in and lie down in. Layers are a good idea. Bodies often get cold during the integration phase even when the room is warm.

Avoid tight waistbands. They matter more than you’d expect when you’re breathing deeply for an hour.

Can I come if I’m pregnant?

Our standard sessions are not suitable during pregnancy. The strong, sustained breathing patterns change blood chemistry and blood flow in ways that aren’t appropriate in pregnancy.

Gentle, pregnancy-specific breathwork does exist, with a differently trained facilitator. Get in touch about a private one-to-one session.

What if I feel emotional during a session?

Completely normal, and more common than you’d think.

Tears, laughter, trembling, or old memories surfacing are all signs that the body is processing. You don’t need to perform them and you don’t need to explain them. The room is held so that whatever arises can move through and resolve.

Nobody will look at you. Everyone else has their eyes closed.

Are there health conditions that rule me out?

Breathwork is generally safe for healthy adults, but it isn’t suitable for everyone. Please check with your health professional before attending, and tell us at booking, if you have or have had:

  • heart or circulation conditions: heart disease, high or low blood pressure, arrhythmia, aneurysm, stroke, blood clots
  • epilepsy or any seizure history
  • severe asthma or other significant respiratory conditions
  • glaucoma, retinal detachment or recent eye surgery
  • certain psychiatric conditions: psychosis, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder
  • osteoporosis, or recent surgery or a significant injury
  • pregnancy: our standard sessions are not suitable during pregnancy

This list isn’t exhaustive. If you’re unsure about anything, email us before you book.

How early should I arrive, and what do I bring?

10 minutes early. That gives you time to settle, choose your spot, arrange your props, and let your nervous system catch up with the fact you’ve arrived.

Just yourself. Futons, blankets, cushions and eye pillows are all provided.

If you’d like your own blanket or eye pillow because it’s more comfortable, bring it. Bring a water bottle too.
